The Alexa and Ecobee thermostat integration is great once it's fully set up correctly, but even if you follow directions 100% correctly it often fails to completely integrate with Alexa and this partial integration can be really confusing.
It turns out that Ecobee may be integrated with Alexa, but the reverse may not be true and Alexa gives Ecobee the silent treatment. If you keep asking for the temperature "in the living room" and Alexa says there's no such device, read on.
The issue is that while your thermostat is talking to Alexa, Alexa doesn't know about your 'stat.
In order to proceed this requires that the thermostat already has the little Alexa logo (in red, below), and is at least responding to voice commands. If not, follow the Ecobee thermostat steps to add it to Alexa.
We all assume that once the Alexa ring is showing up at the top of the display we're done, but alas that is often not the case. Our journey is only halfway completed.
Once you have the Alexa ring on the top of your thermostat like this:
go to your Alexa app, and go through the add device procedure. Click on Devices (step 1, at the bottom) and then the + at the top (step 2).
In the next screen there's a search bar a the top:
type "Ecobee thermostat" select it below, and follow the procedure to scan for new devices. That's it!
